Tips on Meditation
There are a couple of basic 'skills,' common to most meditation. The first is learning to completely relax your body. You must get past the constant distracting signals that your body sends to you. One well used technique for this is to count, from one to ten say, and with each count focus on a part of your body and that set of muscles and see to it that they relax. Tell yourself that those muscles are relaxing during that count. As you reach the count of ten, you should have gone through every part of your body from your toes to your head, or visa versa, it doesn't matter. Or you can condition yourself to just completely relax at will. If you meditate in a sitting position, balance is a consideration because you can't properly relax if you are straining to sit up straight. The other basic ability is to be able to effectively clear and calm your mind. If you have difficulty with this, try focusing on your breathing, Make the breath regular, deep and slow. Whether you are meditating to relax and relieve stress or to visualize, these techniques are essential. |
